Grand Tourmalet (Barèges-La Mongie)
At 10 minutes drive from our house is a large ski area. A lot has been invested in modern ski lifts, so you almost never have to wait in line. On important connections are 6 person chairs lifts that go off the cable when boarding and disembarking so you can get in quietly. The towlifts have been replaced almost everywhere by chair lifts, at least on all connecting lifts.
Because of its southern location you feel the sun immediately burn, it is especially wonderful in February and March.
Solid snow cannons have been installed on almost all the blue and red slopes, which - if it is cold enough - supplement the snow layer at night. As a result, the area is guaranteed snow all season long.
You can drive there, or take the free skibus - at only 150m from our house!
At Tournaboup is the large parking lot. From here you can start and go to the right to La Laquete, a wonderful area for beginners or to get there. A little further to the right is Le Lienz. Here are a few black slopes in the woods, where it is especially during snow. Unfortunately there are no ski cannons, and it is a bit low, there is not always snow. It will be modernized here in the coming years.
The whole area to the left of the Tourmalet is easily accessible. Here are many possibilities for advanced and less advanced skiers.
At the bottom of the map is the Pic du Midi De Bigorre at 2877m. You have to draw an explanation if you want to go up here with your skis. But even without skis, this is a great place to look far into the surrounding area.
